VANCOUVER -- As early as 2001, Premier Gordon Campbell was getting briefing notes that advised his government to sell BC Rail to CN Rail, which was identified as the "golden boy" of railroads in North America.

Two years later, the B.C. government privatized BC Rail in a $1-billion deal with CN, triggering a wave of public criticism and raising complaints from another bidder that the process was unfair.

Internal government documents released by the Supreme Court of B.C. in connection with a political corruption trial show that in the weeks after the deal, which was announced in 2003 and completed in 2004, Mr. Campbell's office received hundreds of angry e-mails.

Mr. Campbell's staff took to responding to the notes with standard letters that defended the deal as "another great news story for British Columbians."

CN Rail says it took no specific measures to reduce air pollutant emissions during the six-day air quality advisory last week, but is generally taking action to reduce pollutants.
The North American rail giant -- the only company that provides rail freight services in Prince George and northern B.C. -- is upgrading its locomotive fleet, said CN spokesperson Kelli Svendsen.
The upgraded locomotives reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 40 per cent and use 15 per cent less fuel than locomotives they are replacing.
"So, some of these, of course, will pass through Prince George," said Svendsen.
